The Land of Enchantment

Some girls like bad boys. I like bad lands.

That probably explains why New Mexico wooed me last week, with its desert cactus and dormant volcanoes and ghost towns off Old Route 66. These are the things that make me weak in the knees.

New Mexico

New MexicoNew MexicoI share this love affair of open, unforgiving landscapes with my husband, too. It’s what drew us together so many years ago, and it’s when we’re traveling these empty, rugged roads side by side that we’re most romantic.

But we have kids. And kids don’t like mushy stuff, especially on long car rides in a rented sedan with limited seating. So during our recent vacation out West we balanced our scandalous, scenic adventures with plenty of kid-friendly activities.

New Mexico

New MexicoNew MexicoWe explored red rock and pueblos, petroglyphed paths and planetariums. We traveled the Turquoise Trail and sipped hot cocoa at the top of Sandia Peak. We ate Indian tacos and ordered room service and splashed in the hotel pool.

New Mexico

New MexicoWe shopped for souveniers in Old Town and strolled the streets of Santa Fe. We visited musuem after museum after museum. We met monkeys at the zoo, sharks at the aquarium, and ducks at the botanical gardens.

For five days, the five of us flirted with the people, places, and prehistoric treasures of this captivating state. And when it was all over, when we boarded the plane for Pennsylvania, our family felt torn. We wanted to stay, to linger longer in the land that some might call barren and ugly.

But we – all of us – fell in love with it. The desert bloomed into a garden in our hearts, full of life and beauty and hope. And forty-thousand feet in the air, flying east, I thought of home and how it’s a lot like these bad lands – sometimes harsh, sometimes solitary, but always, always beautiful.

No wonder I love it there so much.
